Do you remember the story of Sinterklaas I posted last Tuesday for Ruby Tuesday?
If you haven't read it yet, click this link and take a look. I'll wait!
Tuesdays post had my daughter in it, and this is me, age four.
I have tears in my eyes because I was scared to death of Sinterklaas.
I'll tell you what happened.
It was custom when I was little that Sinterklaas visited the homes
of the little ones in the street where I lived.
But Sinterklaas had been offered a drink in each of the neighbouring houses
and by the time he got to our house that man was drunk.
And so were his two assistants.
Sinterklaas asked if I had been good and my mother replied
that I did not always want to eat my soup. I hated soup when I was a kid.
There were two "Zwarte Pieten" (his black assistants)
and one of them threatened to wrap me in a newspaper,
tickle and tug at my toes when I was in bed at night
if I did not change my ways and eat my soup.
Now this may sound funny to a grown up, it scared the hell out of me.
I remember waking up screaming and having terrible nightmares after that.
Now this is not the drunk Sinterklaas, this picture was taken at a local store.
This Sinterklaas was very gentle, but as you can see ... I was terrified!

This picture is an original sepia.
I scanned it, and framed it with Photo Scape.

You are certainly not looking very happy to be there! What enormous eyes and the sepia just highlights it even more. Thank you for sharing this sepia moment!

Gravatar Oh my! At that tender age, I'm not surprised the scared the daylights out of you with that threat.
But though they've scared you, the scare also caused you to remember their existence..to share with us now about them

Gravatar That is so sad. Several of our children were afraid to have their pictures taken with Santa Clause.
The picture is adorable.

Gravatar Hahaha ! When I was little my two uncles ALWAYS were at the post office when St. Nikolaus came with Ruprecht ! Strange wasn't it ? Our son didn't bother about St. Nicolas, wherever he saw one he pushed everybody aside to climb on his knees and smile !

Gravatar Your Sinterklass story while scary reminded me of my daughter and her reaction to Santa Claus and his elves. Every year we would go to the mall to see Santa. Every year her brother would jump on Santa's lap. It was an adventure. But not Krista. No. She was terrified. It wasn't until she was six that we got a picure of Kris with Santa Claus and only because her brother was there to protect her. I guess it isn't just scary black assistants that can get to a kid. LOL

Gravatar I read your Ruby Tuesday post, and I learned that "Sinterklaas is a saint who comes all the way from Spain each year". How wonderful! now I know why Spaniards don't have a Sinterklaas, he is gone to Belgium!!
I know St. Niklaus from the German side of the family...
That's a sweet picture and I am so sorry little kids used to be told such terrible stories!
Happy Thursday

Gravatar If you look - SinterKlass looks like a bishop of the Church, and his two assistants look like Moors, with their dark skin and turbans. How interesting.

Gravatar there are so many traditional things that really just frighten children for no reason
my son was scared to go sleep for weeks when a Santa told him, in a scary voice, that he was watching him while he slept!
you were an adorable little girl
love your pleated dress

Gravatar Jientje - the 12 Days of Christmas is a silly song that we Americans sing. Lot's of people has made changes to the lyrics. The song that I have playing is the version from the Shrek movie. Every year newspapers around the country will print the current costs of the items in the song!
